Plus: U.K. harvest struggles; Intense monsoon season in Asia

Welcome back to ClimateWatch, your go-to source for the latest climate news and information.

This week, we share articles from how regions around the world are feeling the impacts of climate change. We start in the New England area, which is one of the fastest-warming areas in the world. Then, we travel to the United Kingdom where extreme temperatures and drought led to another near record-worst harvest. Lastly, we end up in Asia where multiple countries are dealing with intense natural disasters.

🇺🇸 New England Region Among Fastest-Warming Areas on Earth

The New England region of the United States, including Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, is the fastest-warming area in the U.S., and also one of the fastest-warming regions in the world. New England has warmed an average of 2.5C or 4.5F from 1900 to 2024, far above the global average of 1.3C during the same time frame. Minimum temperatures and night-time temperatures are rising faster than maximum and daytime temperatures, while the winters are heating up at twice the rate of other seasons. New England has experienced 18% fewer days with snow on the ground since 2000. The southern portion of New England sees snow cover receding faster than almost any other snowy area in the world. The excess heat from fossil fuels and climate change is to blame.

🇬🇧 Climate Change Leads to One of the Worst Harvests Ever in the U.K.

British farmers are facing a revenue loss of more than £800m after one of the worst-ever harvests on record. The U.K. experienced its hottest spring and summer on record, as well as drought conditions, which lead to an estimated 20% loss in revenue for farmers. Farmers saw a 38.4% decline in revenue from oilseed rape, a 21.5% decline in milling oat revenues, a 19.6% decline in milling wheat revenues, and a 16.1% decline in feed wheat according to the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit. 2025 was found to be the second-worst year on record for England, after another one of the worst harvests on record in 2024. Experts say there is an urgent need to ensure farmers are better supported to adapt to these climate shocks and build resilience for food security.

🇱🇰 Intense Monsoon Season Batters Parts of Asia

This year’s monsoon season has been unusually intense across portions of Asia. Effects from La Nina and human-induced climate change have compounded the impacts. Multiple strong cyclones have hit the region, killing at least 1,350 people and leaving hundreds missing and millions displaced. Sri Lanka has experienced cascading events such as flooding and landslides. Indonesia suffered devastating flooding. Vietnam has been hit by 14 typhoons this year alone. Thailand also experienced major flooding in its southern provinces. In early November, the Philippines was hit by two typhoons within a week. These countries are already facing complex economic and political challenges along with public pressure to respond to disasters quickly and effectively.
